Services

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I provide both individual and couples therapy in a compassionate, safe atmosphere. My therapeutic style is warm and engaged, and I take a client-centered and anti-oppression approach to my work. I have significant experience working with folks of all sexual orientations and gender expressions, those practicing both monogamy and non-monogamy, people of color, folks from many different backgrounds, and folks in bodies of different sizes, shapes, and abilities. I believe a compassionate respectful orientation toward understanding, hearing, and believing each person’s unique reality as a human is the most important foundation for any healing to happen.

I believe that therapy has the potential to help each person recognize their own wisdom and capacity to manage their lives and achieve their goals. I tailor treatment to individuals’ needs, and consider a person or couple in the context of their lives, rather than focusing on symptoms alone. I enjoy helping individuals increase emotional awareness, manage difficult emotions, decrease distress, improve relationships, solve problems, and meet personal goals. I have particular expertise in working with individuals who are experiencing difficulty related to relationships, body image, self-esteem, identity, and life transitions. I have expertise in working with couples, whether this be in the context of addressing serious issues, or enhancing relationships. I have specialized training in helping couples confront mental or physical issues one partner may be having (such as OCD, eating disorders, or cancer). I also offer premarital counseling.

As a certified yoga instructor, I also provide private and group yoga and mindfulness instruction. For more information on these services.

About Me

I am a clinical psychologist licensed in the state of North Carolina, having received my PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) in 2012, and holding master’s and bachelor’s degrees in psychology from UNC-CH as well. I completed my clinical internship at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY.

I have been in private practice in Durham for 7 years and am honored to have joined the collective Radical Healing in 2019.  My expertise is in several areas of psychotherapy for both individuals and couples. I have specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Couple Therapy (CBCT), as well as incorporation of some training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). My training and experience in couple therapy includes working with couples in relationship distress as well as with those who are looking for relationship enhancement, providing sex therapy including the use of the sensate focus method, conducting premarital counseling, and using CBCT for couples facing individual stressors, such as the mental or physical illness of one partner (e.g. obsessive compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa, breast cancer). I have significant training in several styles of individual therapy, including: extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as insight-oriented and psychodynamic perspectives. I listen from a psychodynamic perspective, regarding deep attention and the therapeutic relationship as paramount. My more recent training in somatic approaches and mindful self-compassion complement my certification in yoga and mindfulness instruction to create a holistic approach to mental health. I have also recently been trained in leading others in writing for health, through Duke Integrative Medicine, and enjoy incorporating creative journaling into therapeutic work. My work addresses a wide variety of issues, including anxiety and depression, life transitions, trauma, identity and self-esteem issues, relational issues, as well more specialized issues such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

In addition to psychotherapy for individuals and couples, I also hold workshops and classes on yoga, writing, and self-compassion practices. I also offer private yoga and mindfulness instruction, and private sessions guiding expressive writing techniques.

Yoga

As the daughter of a yoga teacher, I grew up practicing yoga and meditation. As an adult I became interested in pursuing a personal practice more intently, and received my certification in Hatha Raja yoga from the North Carolina School of Yoga with Chandra Om in 2005. Since that time I have taught classes at several studios in the triangle area, as well as offering private instruction, and maintaining a personal practice.

Hatha Raja yoga is a system combining both the physical postures as well as the mental concentration of yoga. This style of yoga aims to strengthen and purify the body, calm the mind, and to improve the joining together of the body and mind so they can work together in harmony as intended. Movement, breath, and concentration are linked, and the sequences taught are simple yet powerful, leaving the practitioner feeling refreshed, renewed, and relaxed.

Private yoga instruction can be useful for beginners, those who are feeling apprehensive about a group class, those who are interested in receiving more personalized attention and feedback in order to deepen their practice, or those who simply prefer the convenience of being able to schedule instruction on their own time. I also offer partner yoga sessions, which can be a fun way to learn and to connect with your partner.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is an ancient practice involving one-pointed concentration, or gaining control over your mind rather than your mind controlling you. A simple way to explain this concept is the mental discipline of returning your attention to the present moment repeatedly, despite distractions.

My own experience with mindfulness was initially through yoga and meditation practice, and then later through my studies in the field of psychology. Mindfulness has always been an integral part of the science of yoga, and has more recently been incorporated into a number of psychotherapies. Recently, mindfulness has grown in popularity in this country, as more research has surfaced revealing the stunningly positive effects on our neural pathways and overall well-being.

Personally, I have found that regular mindfulness practice allows for greater regulation of emotions, and is incredibly effective in reducing stress. As such, I usually teach mindfulness as part of my psychotherapy sessions, however, for those interested in solely focusing on learning mindfulness, I also offer this instruction as a separate service.

Contact Me

I respect each person’s unique culture. I have experience in and enjoy providing a safe space for individuals and couples of all gender expressions and identifications, all sexual orientations, all relationship practices (monogamy, polyamory, open, etc.), all races, and religions. I understand the dual importance of not having to educate your therapist about your cultural identifications when you seek support, and of having your therapist see you as an individual and not make assumptions about your experience. I am consistently committed to and engaged in my own anti-racism work, and my own continued education around all expressions of gender and sexuality.

Appointments are available Monday-Thursday.

To schedule an initial session, call 919.302.2308. All calls are confidential, and will be responded to promptly. You may also email me for scheduling purposes at jasmine.ti.irvin@gmail.com.
