Jasmine Irvin, Ph.D

Offering psychotherapy services, yoga, and mindfulness instruction to help you resolve problems, deepen relationships, and enjoy a life worth living.

As a licensed clinical psychologist, I provide both individual and couple therapy in a compassionate, safe atmosphere. My approach is collaborative, emphasizes mindfulness, and incorporates evidence-based strategies to help you resolve problems, deepen relationships, and enjoy a life worth living.

I specialize in individual therapy including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and couple therapy. I have particular expertise in treating anxiety, depression, eating disorders, & in addressing life transitions, relationship issues, and problems with low self-esteem. As a certified yoga instructor, I provide private yoga and mindfulness instruction. Because mind and body are so connected, I also bring in more recent training in somatic experience therapy, which dovetails nicely with my background in yoga and mindfulness.

I believe that therapy has the potential to help each person recognize their own wisdom and capacity to manage their lives and achieve their goals. I tailor treatment to individuals’ needs, and consider a person or couple in the context of their lives, rather than focusing on symptoms alone. I enjoy helping individuals increase emotional awareness, manage difficult emotions, decrease distress, improve relationships, solve problems and meet personal goals.

I respect each person’s unique culture. I have experience in and enjoy providing a safe space for individuals and couples of all gender expressions and identifications, all sexual orientations, all relationship practices (monogamy, polyamory, open, etc.), all races, and religions. I understand the dual importance of not having to educate your therapist about your cultural identifications when you seek support, and of having your therapist see you as an individual and not make assumptions about your experience. I am consistently committed to and engaged in my own anti-racism work, and my own continued education around all expressions of gender and sexuality.

Individual Therapy

I take a collaborative approach to working with clients, and tailor the content of sessions and the style of working together to the needs of the individual. Generally, I pull from my extensive training in evidence-based practices, particularly those with an emphasis on mindfulness.

Whether there is a specific challenge or problem you are facing, you want to learn to cope more effectively with life’s day to day stressors, or to increase self-knowledge and awareness, I am prepared to tailor the individual work to meet your needs. I generally pull from my extensive training in evidence-based treatment approaches, particularly those with an emphasis on mindfulness, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (see more below).

My practice is also informed by my training in psychodynamic perspectives. I believe in listening deeply to my clients, and that the course of therapy should be a collaboration informed by both the knowledge of the therapist as well as the insights people develop about themselves along the way.

Additionally, because mind and body are so connected, I bring in more recent training in somatic therapy techniques. In this work, the effects of trauma and stress on the nervous system are directly addressed in therapy sessions through body awareness exercises, and exercises intended to soothe the nervous system and thereby help with emotion regulation.

I have particular expertise in treating the following issues:

  • anxiety (including generalized, social, OCD, specific phobia)
  • depression
  • eating disorders and body image concerns
  • relationship issues
  • PTSD
  • life transitions
  • academic issues such as time management and managing perfectionism
  • career issues such as writer’s block or broader issues of choosing a career

If we work together, I will meet with you and listen to your concerns, and together we will formulate a plan regarding which modality and style of therapy will be most helpful for you.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

This therapy combines cognitive behavioral techniques with strategies to regulate emotions, such as mindful awareness & distress tolerance.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was originally designed by Marsha Linehan, a psychologist at the University of Washington, for the treatment of suicidal ideation often characteristic of those with Borderline Personality Disorder. Today, DBT has been widely researched and practiced, and has been established as an effective treatment for a variety of issues including; mood disorders, eating disorders, and chronic health problems.

The full treatment involves both individual therapy and a skills group. In this modality clients also complete a weekly diary card of therapy targets, and may use coaching calls with the individual therapist to assist reduction of ineffective or self-harming behaviors. To determine whether this therapy is appropriate for you, contact me to schedule a consultation session. I also incorporate mindfulness and other aspects of DBT more generally, and am happy to discuss your interests and needs to help you find the therapy that will be most effective for you.

Couple Therapy

I practice Cognitive Behavioral Couple Therapy (CBCT), having been trained by Don Baucom, a clinical psychologist and the creator of CBCT, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Couple therapy sessions are typically offered once per week for up to 75 minutes. This therapy involves an initial assessment of several sessions, including discussion of current concerns, as well as relationship history and individual history. I then set goals in collaboration with the couple, whether these involve resolving problematic communication patterns, working through issues such as infidelity, or simply enhancing your relationship.

I have particular expertise addressing individual issues, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, or anorexia nervosa, in the context of couple therapy. Because your partner is such an integral part of daily life, this way of approaching struggles together can be quite effective, and can help prevent relationship issues that may exacerbate individual issues.

I also offer premarital counseling, which can be a fun and fruitful experience to help deepen and strengthen your connection, preparing you with effective tools for the journey ahead.

Yoga

As the daughter of a yoga teacher, I grew up practicing yoga and meditation. As an adult I became interested in pursuing a personal practice more intently, and received my certification in Hatha Raja yoga from the North Carolina School of Yoga with Chandra Om in 2005.

I have taught classes at several studios in the triangle area, as well as offering private instruction, and maintaining a personal practice.

Hatha Raja yoga is a system combining both the physical postures as well as the mental concentration of yoga. This style of yoga aims to strengthen and purify the body, calm the mind, and to improve the joining together of the body and mind so they can work together in harmony as intended. Movement, breath, and concentration are linked, and the sequences taught are simple yet powerful, leaving the practitioner feeling refreshed, renewed, and relaxed.

Private yoga instruction can be useful for beginners, those who are feeling apprehensive about a group class, those who are interested in receiving more personalized attention and feedback in order to deepen their practice, or those who simply prefer the convenience of being able to schedule instruction on their own time. I also offer partner yoga sessions, which can be a fun way to learn and to connect with your partner.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is an ancient practice involving one-pointed concentration, or gaining control over your mind rather than your mind controlling you. A simple way to explain this concept is the mental discipline of returning your attention to the present moment repeatedly, despite distractions.

My own experience with mindfulness was initially through yoga and meditation practice, and then later through my studies in the field of psychology. Mindfulness has always been an integral part of the science of yoga, and has more recently been incorporated into a number of psychotherapies. Recently, mindfulness has grown in popularity in this country, as more research has surfaced revealing the stunningly positive effects on our neural pathways and overall well-being.

Personally, I have found that regular mindfulness practice allows for greater regulation of emotions, and is incredibly effective in reducing stress. As such, I usually teach mindfulness as part of my psychotherapy sessions, however, for those interested in solely focusing on learning mindfulness, I also offer this instruction as a separate service.
